Dr. Pillai has more than 30 years of medical experience in anesthesiology, intensive care medicine, and critical care management.
Dr. Pillai obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Medical College Trivandrum, Kerala University, India, in 1986. He later completed a Diploma in Anesthesia (DA) from Medical College Kottayam, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala, India, in 1991, followed by a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine from the same institution in 1992. Over the course of his career, Dr. Pillai has further strengthened his expertise through specialized training in bronchoscopy, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), liver dialysis, percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy, and disaster management, in addition to certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
Dr. Pillai has extensive experience in anesthesiology and critical care across major tertiary hospitals in the United Arab Emirates and internationally. Throughout his career, he has been responsible for the management of critically ill patients in multidisciplinary intensive care units, including ventilatory support, hemodynamic monitoring, and advanced life-support interventions. His expertise includes airway management, invasive monitoring techniques, central and arterial line insertion, percutaneous tracheostomy, bronchoscopy, dialysis catheter insertion, Swan-Ganz catheter placement, PiCCO monitoring, temporary pacemaker insertion, and epidural catheter placement. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Pillai has played an active leadership role in critical care services, coordinating physician teams, participating in quality and morbidity committees, and contributing to continuing medical education activities and clinical governance initiatives. He has also been involved in academic presentations, research publications, and international medical conferences related to anesthesia and critical care.
Prior to joining Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed Hospital, Dr. Pillai served as Lead Physician and Intensivist at Long Term Medical and Rehabilitation Hospital in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Earlier in his career, he worked as Acting Consultant in the Intensive Care Unit at Al Ain Hospital, Specialist Senior Registrar in the Surgical ICU at Rashid Hospital Trauma Center in Dubai, Specialist Intensivist at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in Abu Dhabi, and Senior Specialist Intensivist at Al Jazeira and Central Hospitals under the Ministry of Health in Abu Dhabi.
At Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed Hospital, Dr. Pillai’s scope of practice covers anesthetic management for surgical procedures, perioperative care for complex and high-risk patients, advanced airway management, critical care stabilization, ventilatory support, invasive monitoring, pain management, and multidisciplinary intensive care coordination for critically ill patients.
