Dr. Mohamed Elgafy

Dr. Mohamed El-Gafy has more than 24 years of medical experience in anesthesiology, intensive care medicine, and perioperative patient management.

Dr. El-Gafy obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the Faculty of Medicine at Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, graduating in 1998 with a Very Good grade. He later completed a Master’s degree in Anesthesiology in 2002 and subsequently earned a Doctorate (MD) in Anesthesiology from Ain Shams University in 2007.

Dr. El-Gafy has extensive experience in anesthesiology across a wide range of surgical specialties. His clinical expertise includes anesthesia for general surgery, orthopedic surgery, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) procedures, pediatric surgery, vascular surgery, plastic surgery, obstetric and gynecological surgery, urological procedures, ophthalmic surgery, neurosurgery, and cardiothoracic surgery. He also has advanced experience in regional anesthesia techniques including peripheral nerve blocks using nerve stimulators and ultrasound guidance.

In addition to his work in anesthesiology, Dr. El-Gafy has significant experience in intensive care medicine and emergency care. His clinical work includes the diagnosis and management of critically ill patients, including cases involving polytrauma, sepsis, multi-organ failure, severe burns, and coma. His expertise also includes advanced life support, central and arterial line placement, difficult airway management, invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation, advanced hemodynamic monitoring, and nutritional support for critically ill patients.

Prior to joining Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed Hospital, Dr. El-Gafy held several senior leadership roles in the UAE healthcare system. Most recently, he served as Consultant of Anesthesia and Head of the Intensive Care Unit at Liv Hospital in Dubai. Before that, he worked as Consultant and Head of the Anesthesia and ICU Departments and Deputy Medical Director at Gargash Hospital in Dubai. Earlier in his career, he served as Consultant and Head of Anesthesia and ICU at Al Baraha Hospital in Dubai for more than a decade. In parallel with his clinical practice, he has also served as a Lecturer in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at Ain Shams University and as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Sharjah.

At Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed Hospital, Dr. El-Gafy’s scope of practice covers the anesthetic management for a wide range of surgical procedures, advanced regional anesthesia techniques, perioperative patient care, airway management and invasive monitoring, mechanical ventilation management, and the multidisciplinary care of critically ill patients in intensive care settings.
